Marine construction project completed by Ocean's Edge Marine in Midcoast Maine

Project 1

6' × 74' Pier

This 6’ x 74’ pier is officially complete and ready to enjoy. Another great project from start to finish—from fabrication in our shop to final installation on the water. Another job we’re proud to put our name on. A big thank you to our crew for the hard work and attention to detail that went into bringing this project together.

Location
Poor House Cove South Bristol
Type of work
Pier construction and installation
The challenge
One of the primary challenges of this 6’ x 74’ pier project was placing concrete along a shoreline with an elevation change of approximately 30–40 feet, making access with a conventional concrete truck impossible. Using our marine equipment, we mixed concrete directly on the barge, transferred it by hopper, and placed it with our crane—allowing us to efficiently complete the pour from the water. The pier was also constructed in multiple 34-foot sections, requiring precise pile placement to ensure each section landed correctly on its pile caps while keeping the entire structure square and properly aligned.
Work completed
Once the concrete work was complete and final measurements were established, we laid out and pile drove the structural pilings to refusal. Each piling was then cut to the proper benchmark elevation in preparation for setting the pier. The 6’ x 74’ pier was prefabricated in sections at our shop and transported to the project site. Using our barge-mounted crane, we lifted each section from the barge, positioned it over the pilings, and secured it in place. With the main pier installed, we hung the gangway, positioned the float, and drove the guide piles to complete the system. From shop fabrication and pile driving to crane work and final installation, the entire project was completed using our own crew and marine equipment.
Finished result
Built to last. Built on the water. Another job we’re proud to put our name on. The finished 6’ x 74’ pier provides a strong, functional waterfront system designed for years of use, with a gangway and float system completing the connection to the water.

Project 2

200' Shorline Stabilization & 78' Pier Construction

Our crew knocked this one out of the park. From approximately 200 feet of shoreline stabilization and natural stone access to the completed 78’ pier system, we couldn’t be happier with how this waterfront project came together. Every phase presented its own challenges, but the finished product reflects the hard work, craftsmanship, and attention to detail our crew brings to every project. A big thank you to our guys for the long days and effort it took to bring this one across the finish line. Projects like this don’t happen without a great team. We’re grateful for another happy customer and the opportunity to build a waterfront that will be used and enjoyed for years to come.

Location
Roderick Road South Bristol (Damariscotta River)
Type of work
Shoreline Stabilization • Shoreline Access • Pier Construction
The challenge
One of the biggest challenges of this project was working with the uneven, exposed ledge along the shoreline. Each key rock had to be carefully selected, positioned, drilled, and pinned into the ledge to create a solid foundation for the stabilization. In areas where ledge wasn’t exposed, we excavated and keyed the stone into the shoreline to properly lock the system in place. Limited site access added another challenge, requiring careful planning and equipment placement throughout the project. The multi-section pier system presented its own challenges. To properly establish the pile locations, we used our barge-mounted crane to place an excavator on the shoreline, removed existing stone to expose the underlying ledge, and drilled pile sockets directly into the ledge. Precise layout and positioning were critical to ensure the piling system properly aligned with each prefabricated section of the pier.
Work completed
We completed approximately 200 feet of shoreline stabilization, incorporating a natural stone step system to provide access from the bluff down to the shoreline. A reinforced concrete foundation was poured along the shoreline to structurally connect and secure the new pier system. From there, we constructed and installed the 78’ pier, consisting of a 6’ x 66’ main section with a 12’ x 12’ pier head. The pier was supported by pilings set into drilled ledge sockets, creating a strong, permanent connection to the shoreline and underlying ledge.
Finished result
A stabilized and functional waterfront built for long-term use. With approximately 200 feet of shoreline protected, natural stone access from the bluff to the water, and a new 78’ pier system, the finished project brings the entire waterfront together—built to handle the elements and be enjoyed for years to come.

Project 3

Wiscasset Town Landing Pier

Another waterfront project we’re proud to have been a part of. The Wiscasset Town Landing project included a new concrete abutment, precast landing system, and six 20’ float sections creating 120’ of new public waterfront access. From shoreline excavation and concrete work to float assembly and pile driving, our crew handled each phase of the project from start to finish. A lot of planning, precision, and hard work went into bringing this one together. We’re grateful for the opportunity to work with the Town of Wiscasset and build something that will serve recreational boaters, commercial users, and the surrounding community for years to come.

Location
Wiscasset, ME
Type of work
Marine concrete construction, commercial float construction, and pile driving for a new 120’ municipal float system.
The challenge
One of the primary challenges of this project was working within Maine’s tidal conditions to excavate, form, and pour a large concrete abutment directly along the shoreline. The abutment required precise layout and benchmark elevations to ensure the new 120’ float system would connect and sit at the proper elevation. The project also required removing existing pilings left behind from the former pier, adding another layer of marine demolition and coordination before the new system could be installed.
Work completed
We began by excavating the shoreline to prepare for the new concrete abutment, followed by forming and pouring the 8’ x 14’ foundation. From there, we graded and compacted the shoreline to create a stable, level base for the precast concrete landing planks. Once the shoreline work was complete, we assembled and positioned the six 20’ float sections to create the new 120’ float system. Five Class A pilings were then driven to refusal, providing the guide system needed to keep the floats properly aligned and positioned throughout the changing tide.
Finished result
The finished project provides a durable, level landing and a new 120’ float system designed to handle changing tides and daily harbor use. With a solid concrete abutment, precast landing system, and Class A guide pilings, the completed installation provides a strong and functional connection from the shoreline to the water. Built for long-term service, the new town landing provides dependable public waterfront access for recreational boaters, commercial users, and the surrounding community.

Project 4

Thrumcap Island Pier

Thrumcap Island was one of those projects that put every part of our operation to work. Located in an exposed island environment with roughly 40 feet of elevation change, this project required careful planning, the right equipment, and a crew willing to take on whatever the site threw at us. We started by completely removing the existing pier and worked from there—excavating and hammering through shale to reach solid ledge, drilling sockets, placing concrete from the barge, installing the new pier and anchoring systems, constructing the shoreline abutment and concrete stairs, and completing the surrounding site work. From rough seas and difficult access to the final installation, our crew handled this project from start to finish using our own marine and land-based equipment. The result is a strong, functional waterfront system built for the environment and designed to provide dependable access to the island for years to come. Another challenging project, another great result, and another one we’re proud to put our name on.

Location
Thrumcap Island South Bristol
Type of work
Pier Construction • Marine Concrete • Ledge Socket Drilling • Shoreline Access
The challenge
Working on Thrumcap Island presented a unique set of challenges. With the site exposed to open ocean conditions, rough seas and changing weather required careful planning and coordination throughout the project. The approximately 40-foot elevation change from the shoreline added another level of complexity to access, material handling, and construction. Subsurface conditions also required extensive ledge work. To establish a solid foundation for the concrete abutment and stair system, we hammered back layers of shale until reaching competent ledge. From there, the pier locations were precisely laid out and sockets were drilled into solid ledge to provide a secure foundation for the piling system.
Work completed
We began by completely removing the existing pier system and preparing the site for a full rebuild. From there, our crew handled each phase of construction, including shoreline excavation, ledge work, socket drilling, concrete placement, pile and anchoring systems, and installation of the new pier. Concrete was mixed and placed from the barge using our skid steer and hopper system, allowing us to work efficiently in an area inaccessible to conventional concrete trucks. The project also included construction of the concrete abutment and stair system, along with excavation, material delivery, grading, and site work to restore the upland area and create a functional lawn. From demolition and barge operations to concrete, excavation, and final pier construction, the project was completed using our own crew and equipment from start to finish.
Finished result
he finished project provides a strong, functional pier system designed to withstand the exposed conditions surrounding Thrumcap Island while providing safe and dependable access for the property owner. From the drilled ledge sockets and concrete abutment to the new pier and anchoring system, each component was built with the island environment in mind. The new concrete stair system also creates the foundation for future seasonal shoreline access when the floating gangway is removed. Combined with the completed site work and restored upland area, the result is a durable and well-integrated waterfront system built to serve the property for years to come.

Project 5

Seavey Island

Seaview Island was a complete waterfront reconstruction from the ground up. What started as a storm-damaged shoreline and aging pier system became one of those projects that put nearly every part of our operation to work. Our crew removed the existing pier and surrounding rock, excavated back to the natural beach and ledge, drilled sockets, drove pilings, and completely reshaped and stabilized the shoreline. Using our barge, excavator, and track carrier, we moved and placed approximately 1,000 yards of additional key rock and riprap before constructing the new concrete abutment and installing the two 45’ pier sections to create the finished 6’ x 90’ pier. From marine demolition and excavation to shoreline reconstruction, concrete work, pile driving, and final pier installation, our crew handled the project from start to finish. A challenging island project, a completely rebuilt waterfront, and another job we’re proud to put our name on.

Location
Seavey Island Davis Strait (mouth of St. George river)
Type of work
Pier Reconstruction • Shoreline Stabilization • Pile Driving • Marine Excavation
The challenge
Seaview Island presented a unique combination of logistics, terrain, and existing shoreline conditions. While the beach provided a good landing and working area, the soft terrain would not support conventional dump trucks or other wheeled vehicles. All equipment had to be transported to the island by barge, and our track carrier became an important part of the operation, allowing us to move large quantities of stone and material efficiently across the beach without relying on conventional trucks. The existing waterfront had also been heavily impacted by a previous storm, leaving behind a deteriorated shoreline and an old pier foundation surrounded by a large mass of stone. Before reconstruction could begin, the existing pier and rock had to be removed to expose the natural beach and underlying ledge. From there, new piling locations were established using a combination of drilled ledge sockets and pilings driven to refusal where conditions required. With the old system removed, we were able to reshape and reconstruct the shoreline, establish the new stabilization system, construct a concrete abutment, and prepare the waterfront for installation of the new 6’ x 90’ pier.
Work completed
We began by completely removing the existing pier system and excavating the large quantity of stone that surrounded the original pilings. Using our excavator and track carrier, we cleared the waterfront back to the natural beach and exposed ledge, giving us a clean foundation to begin the reconstruction. From there, we installed the new piling system, drilling sockets into exposed ledge and driving pilings to refusal where conditions transitioned into deeper sand and mud flats. We then reshaped and rebuilt the shoreline, reusing suitable existing stone and barging in approximately 1,000 yards of additional key rock and riprap to create a new stabilized shoreline and breakwater-style rock system. Once the shoreline was established, we constructed a new concrete abutment and installed the two 45’ prefabricated pier sections, creating the finished 6’ x 90’ pier. From demolition and marine excavation to pile work, shoreline reconstruction, concrete, and final pier installation, our crew handled the complete waterfront reconstruction from start to finish.
Finished result
The finished project transformed a storm-damaged waterfront into a reconstructed and stabilized shoreline built to handle the demanding conditions of its island location. With a new concrete abutment, extensive key rock and riprap stabilization, and a 6’ x 90’ pier supported by both drilled ledge sockets and driven pilings, the entire system was rebuilt with long-term durability in mind. The result is a strong, functional waterfront that provides dependable access to the property while creating a more stable connection between the pier, shoreline, and surrounding terrain. What began as a deteriorated waterfront was rebuilt into a complete system designed to serve the property for years to come.
